Feeling a bit lost when it comes to choosing paper for your print projects? Terms like basis weight, points, and coatings can sound confusing. Don’t worry—we’ve got you covered! Here’s a quick guide to help you master the essentials and make informed decisions for your next print job.
Basis Weight
Basis weight refers to how much a ream (500 sheets) of paper weighs at its standard size (the uncut dimensions printers use). For example, a ream of book paper weighing 70 pounds is referred to as 70-lb. paper. In metric terms, that’s about 104 g/m².
Points (pt)
When dealing with thicker stocks like cover or card, thickness is measured in points (abbreviated as “pt”). One point equals 1/1000th of an inch. For instance, an “8-pt. cover” is 0.008 inches thick.
Paper Grade
Paper grade refers to its intended purpose. Common grades include:
- Bond Paper: Used for letters and documents.
- Book Paper: Designed for—you guessed it—books.
- Cover, Bristol, Tag, and Index: Thicker options for a wide range of applications, from postcards to packaging.
Coatings: C1S and C2S
Coated papers are treated during production to improve color vibrancy and detail.
- C1S (Coated One Side): Ideal for labels and packaging.
- C2S (Coated Two Sides): Perfect for double-sided printing projects like brochures and catalogs.
Brightness
Brightness measures how much light a sheet reflects.
- Standard White Copy Paper: Brightness around 92.
- Higher Brightness: Great for commercial printing like business cards or marketing materials.
- Lower Brightness: Often used for books, flyers, or eco-friendly designs with a vintage look.
Paper can also reflect varying amounts of red, green, and blue light, which may impact the final print color, so choose wisely!
Choosing the right paper can dramatically enhance the look, feel, and effectiveness of your print projects.
